Moving Tips

  • If you are using a Mover make a note of your shipment registration number found usaually in the upper right-hand corner of your bill or Invoice and keep it with you or in a  in case you need to contact your mover with any questions you may have.
  • It's a great idea to esignate a dresser drawer for sheets and towels so you won't have to search through boxes for these items the first night in your new home.
  • If by chance you need to store some of your belongings, it is a great idea to tour the warehouse or Storage area of the mover you're planning to use. Look for things like cleanliness, organization, security, etc.
  • Onceyou have cleaned and hand dried your refrigerator/freezer, put a handful of fresh coffee or baking soda in a sock or wraped in a towel and place it inside to keep the interior smelling fresh.
  • Besure to take your current phone book with you. You may need to touch base friends or businesses back in your previous hometown.
  • Another great idea is to prepare an "Unload Me First" carton with essentials that you will need immediately at your new home. Include a zip lock bag filled with hardware (screws and bolts) from disassembled items, such as beds and other furniture.
  • Don't forget to the van foreman before hheads out to your new residence,a phone number where you can be reached. Get the van foreman's cell number too.
  • At destination, you might want to consider having the TV and VCR hooked up first to occupy the kids while the rest of the van is being unloaded.
  • Try to keep your children and pets calm and away from all the activity on moving day you a friend to watch them at their house or at a park. Besure to keep your pet's food, water bowl and leash handy too.
  • When moving plants to your new home in your car, try not to let foliage rest against the windows, as the leaves will scorch.
  • Once youarrival at your new home, let your personal computer or laptop acclimate to room temperature before plugging it in.
  • Try to arrange cleaning and other home services for the day after loading, as things will be hectic on move day and the different home service providers will be out of each other's way.
  • Have your utilities such as Power and Gas shut off the day after loading to avoid being “left in the dark” while you are trying to move out of your old house! -It's good neighbor to allow for a couple of days for the new owner to get items transferred.
  • Sme items that can't or shouldn't be moved with the mover include anything flammable, combustible, aerosol cans, hazardous materials, gasoline, plants, paint, ammunition and explosives, jewelry, legal documents (wills, financial papers, insurance documents, etc.).
  • Try to declutter by looking at your possessions. What can be sold or donated to charity? What hasn't been used within the last year or so? Donate those items that you will not be moving.
  • Place everything that youare moving one location, if at possible (don't forget items at a friend's house or at your old office).
  • Make a detailed list of everyone you need to notify about your move: friends, professionals, creditors, subscriptions, Mother-etc.
  • A good  a mail subscription to the local paper in your new city to familiarize yourself with local government, social news and activities.
  • Besure to contact schools, doctors, lawyers, the vet, etc. to obtain copies of your personal records; ask for referrals. Collect all your other important documents (DMV records, stocks, wills, etc.).
  • Pick up a change-of-address kit from the post office and begin filling out the cards; or, simply click here to go to www.USPS.com and do it online. But the kits are filled with great coupons.
  • Don't forget to contact utility companies for service disconnect/connect; remember to keep phone and utilities connected at your current home until the day after moving and longer if the cleaner are coming they will need water and power. Start with: gas, electric, water, telephone, cable TV, trash collection.
  • Talk to your insurance companies or agent about (auto, homeowners or renter's, medical, and life) to arrange for coverage in your new home.
  • If you decided to pack yourself, purchase packing boxesfrom your local mover or Wal-Mart. Pack items that you won't need now. See packing tips
  • Besure to ar to close your accounts in your local bank and open accounts in your new location.
  • Have your car checked and serviced for the trip (Oil Change,Tune Up). Also, make sure that your automobile is prepared for the type of weather conditions you'll be traveling in.
  • Drain the gas and/or oil from power equipment such as lawn mowers, snow blowers, cars that are going with the mover, Weed Eaters, and soo on.
