As one of Root 100’s top 10 most influential African Americans, Carruthers has written for several prominent news publications, been an advocate for immigrant rights, and worked to build solidarity between Black and Palestinian liberation movements. In the early 1990’s BIS was planning to build a Masjid in the UAB area. This project was dropped because of cost and the availability of a better location, current Homewood Masjid.
