Did you know police can just take your stuff if they suspect it’s involved in a crime? They can!
It’s a shady process called “civil asset forfeiture,” and it would make for a weird episode of Law and Order.
See?

Start A New Life Free Of Liberals With “Conservative Move” (HBO)

You can’t pick your family, but you can pick your friends. And if they start to vote differently than you, some families are willing to pick up, leave and find new friends. Sick of states that permit legal marijuana? Same-sex marriages? Laws that permit transgender people to use the bathroom of their choice? What if there were a better way?

Last year, VICE News went to McKinney, Texas to check out “Conservative “Move” – a real estate company that says it has the solution to living a life free of liberals. They’ll try to find you a place to live, a job with a decent wage, and the best schools for your children, in Texas or any other Republican stronghold.

Meet The Krassensteins, The Superstar Bros Of #Resistance Twitter (HBO)

Ed and Brian Krassenstein are big stars of a weird corner of the internet. A corner called #Resistance Twitter, where people tweet endlessly — often with the caps lock on — about how corrupt they think President Trump is.

The Krassensteins came to #Resistance Twitter from their lives as internet guys. You know, those guys who just make money from the internet. The brothers own a lot of websites, and they run ads on them. They sell them. It’s worked out well. They live in matching houses across a canal in Fort Myers, Florida.

Now the Krassensteins are trying to turn the #Resistance into a business. That’s led them to get more than a few tweets sent their way accusing them of being the corrupt ones.

VICE News went to Fort Myers to watch the Krassensteins do their thing on the day Michael Cohen was sentenced.

Miami’s Real Estate Market is Benefiting from Rising Sea Levels (HBO)

Miami's Real Estate Market is Benefiting from Rising Sea Levels (HBO)

The latest reports from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predict that sea levels are likely to rise almost three feet by the end of the century. And in South Florida, sea level rise and climate change are already having an effect on roads and drinking water.

But looking at Miami Beach’s real estate market, you wouldn’t know that the city is potentially facing a half a trillion dollars in flood damage. Shane Smith met with two of Miami beach’s top real estate brokers, Jill Hertzberg and Jill Eber, to find out what’s protecting the market. He also speaks with an insurance expert from Wharton who explains how the city’s public funds come predominantly from real estate taxes — meaning that putting more property at risk is also the very thing helping Miami deal with rising seas.

This Is What Life Is Like Inside Assad's Syria | VICE on HBO

Six years of civil war has left most of Syria, a country once known for its ancient cities, in ruins.

On the battlefield, Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad’s forces continue to fight a loose, and increasingly diminished collection of anti-government rebels. While in the country’s east, coalition forces have crippled a once fearsome ISIS, driving the group from its strongholds.

War continues to rattle much of the country, and peace remains a notion far off in the distance, but one thing has come into focus with each passing day: Assad isn’t going anywhere.

To see what life is like under Assad’s rule, VICE New sent Isobel Yeung to Syria just as the final bombs were falling over Aleppo.

People Are Making Big Money Kicking Detroit Residents Out Of Their Homes (HBO)

People Are Making Big Money Kicking Detroit Residents Out Of Their Homes (HBO)

In the last 15 years, one in three Detroit properties have been foreclosed on. When most people think of foreclosure, they think of people who can’t afford to pay off their mortgages.

But in Detroit, it’s often the result of people struggling to pay their property taxes. One big reason is that, in the years after the Great Recession, the city went bankrupt and failed to lower property assessments far enough to account for the impact of the housing crisis. While the value of residents’ homes fell, their taxes remained inordinately high, and tens of thousands of people fell so far behind on their inflated tax bills that the county seized their homes and sold them off at annual auctions.

In recent years, the city and county have lowered assessments and offered reduced interest rates to some homeowners. But they have no plans to stop punishing those who were overcharged in the past.

VICE News followed this year’s tax foreclosure auction and investigated how the county financially benefits from the process. As Detroit touts its comeback and celebrates its success in climbing out of the largest municipal bankruptcy in American history, many of the city’s residents remain on the brink of displacement.

The Miss America Pageant…how is this still a thing?
They claim to give more scholarships to women than any other organization, and, unfortunately, they’re right.
To illustrate these problems, John Oliver stages his own pageant with the help of Kathy Griffin.

Here are the links to the women’s scholarship funds that John mentioned on air:

In 2011, the state of Alabama passed one of the harshest anti-immigrant laws in the history of the United States. Based on the hardline policy known as “self-deportation,” Alabama’s HB-56 aimed to make life so miserable for illegal immigrants that they’d opt to leave the state on their own: the law granted police unprecedented powers to arrest, question, and detain suspected illegal immigrants, and even criminalized citizens who provided undocumented workers with jobs, housing, or transportation. The law created a climate of hostility that may have forced tens of thousands of immigrants to flee—and it may also have done real damage to the state’s economy.

With illegal immigration roiling American communities and the upcoming presidential race, we sent Thomas Morton to Alabama to see what it would look like if undocumented workers just disappeared.

Then: when a massive earthquake ravaged Haiti in 2010, killing more than 300,000 people and leaving more than 2 million survivors homeless, the international community came together to provide nearly $10 billion in relief and reconstruction aid. But where did all that money go? And why are so many Haitians still living in abominable conditions in the very places that foreigners promised to rebuild?

VICE’s Vikram Gandhi goes to Port-au-Prince to follow the money trail and see whether the billions of dollars in aid are actually changing the lives for the better.

We Spent 54 Hours On A Train Full Of Video Game Programmers (HBO)

We Spent 54 Hours On A Train Full Of Video Game Programmers (HBO)

Do you like videogames? Do you like trains? How about both?

If you answered ‘yes’ to the above (and you know how to program), then Train Jam just might be for you.

The idea is simple: get on a train in Chicago, and in the 54 hours it takes you to get to San Francisco, program a video game from start to finish.

There’s not a lot of privacy on the train, nor is there a lot of showering. But for an up-and-coming game developer, there’s a ton of opportunity to work with seasoned veterans on anything from a balloon deathmatch simulator to a Pac-Man clone made with actual door springs.

Five years ago, there were only a few dozen takers. But this year, they’ve taken over the whole train, and even had to add a few extra cars to accommodate everyone.

VICE News hopped on an Amtrak to find out why people from 30 countries decided to cram together for America’s nerdiest train ride.

Why These Alabama Voters Are Sticking By Roy Moore (HBO)

Why These Alabama Voters Are Sticking By Roy Moore (HBO)

Views:608748|Rating:4.08|View Time:7:32Minutes|Likes:4823|Dislikes:1083
These are the views of twelve conservative voters who gathered inside a Birmingham coffee house Thursday for a candid discussion about the senate race in their state. Voters dismissed many of the allegations against Moore — while saying behavior that was acceptable in Alabama decades ago shouldn’t be measured by modern standards.

“Forty years ago in Alabama, there’s a lotta mamas and daddies that would be thrilled that their 14 year-old was getting hit on by a district attorney,” one voter said. “There was still clothes on,” another voter said of the first allegations against Moore. “As soon as the girl said she wasn’t comfortable, he took her home.”

The panel was compiled and moderated by Frank Luntz, the Republican pollster well known for arranging focus groups with GOP voters.

This segment originally aired Dec. 8, 2017, on VICE News Tonight on HBO.
